The Cross

Within the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site there now reside a number of churches. Included amongst these is The Church of Reconciliation, the Protestant church. Though it is noted that the general failure of the German Protestant Church to repudiate National Socialism made it inappropriate for there to be a representative building from Protestantism within the site for many years after the war and the ending of the Nazi regime.

On a visit to this site in 2019 I was struck, amongst the brutalist architecture of the church, by the form of the cross that was placed above the altar/communion table.

The depiction was unlike any I have seen elsewhere. The cross is formed by the space between four large blocks of metal. Between those a figure is, depending on one's perspective, either being crushed by the load bearing down from all directions, or bursting forth from that suffocating load. The depiction both involves resistance and resignation, oppression and redemption, there is something of both Good Friday and Easter Sunday about the image. Of both death and life.

Spill the Beans Half-Century!

I can't quite believe it, but today I finished working on putting together the fiftieth issue of Spill the Beans, which is hereby released into the wild. What a fabulously creative team the Spill the Beans Resource Team is to provide this great collection of resources to stimulate and challenge as we prepare worship and activities for all ages. It is a privilege to work with this wonderful group, some of whom have been there right from the very first meeting and still muster creativity and fresh outlooks and some who have just joined us recently offering new inspiration and enthusiasm. Everyone who has been a part of the team over the last 12 years has been a gift to the Church and I thank them all.

Issue 50 is the second issue in our new 'Word and World' series. This is a new two year plan of Scripture readings through which we are endeavouring to link to important events/days worldwide, nationally or locally. We have brought these into short series of services. You can download the table of readings here.

We continue to focus on how we worship intergenerationally within our church contexts. Each issue of Spill the Beans is now organised by how we might use different resources to "tell the story", "explore the story", and "live the story". You will still find a range of materials and ideas, but we challenge you to think creatively about how you use it and to think more intergenerationally.

You will find more about this approach in the Introduction section of the issue. Any feedback you want to offer will be most welcome. This is easily done on the Facebook page/group.

Oodles of Resources for Worship and Age Groups

One of the groups I am involved in is the Spill the Beans Resource Team, for which I am the editor of the publications we produce. Before going away on holiday I have finally got around to compiling a fourth pack of resources for worship leaders and age group leaders. This is a pack of our 2019-2022 issues that took us on a second cycle of the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL).

This joins a pack from our first cycle of the RCL, a pack from our four year foray with the Narrative Lectionary (NL) and our own user-inspired "The Road Less Travelled" lectionary that we used in 2018-19. This past year we have been using The Women's Lectionary (the last issue of which is now available), and from Advent we will be moving into another home-grown Word and World Lectionary that the team has created.

If you are interested in our previous packs, they are all readily available and you can find out more from the Spill the Beans website.

Note that each of these packs is large (some are over 300 MB) so be patient when downloading them as they will take some time, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

Spill the Beans, Issue 48

The Spill the Beans Resource Team completes its alternative journey for 2022/23 using a lectionary prepared by Ashley M Wilcox titled "The Women's Lectionary" . This new lectionary seeks to provide something of a rebalance to the usually androcentric approach we have to the Bible by deliberately focusing on bible passages about women and female imagery of God.

The team is also deliberately trying to focus more on how we worship intergenerationally within our church contexts. That has shifted our thinking somewhat so that instead of defining materials by age groups rather we are organising by how we might use different resources to "tell the story", "explore the story", and "live the story". Youi will still find a range of materials and ideas, but we challenge you to think creatively about how you use it and to think more intergenerationally.

You will find more about this approach in the Introduction section of the issue. Any feedback you want to offer will be most welcome. This is easily done on the Facebook page/group.

Created by folks here in Scotland, this issue has lots of ideas and resources for you to inspire, adapt, use in your setting. If you have not used Spill the Beans before then please have a look at this sample.

In this copy we also have details of a new two year lectionary that the Spill the Beans Resource Team have devised for 2023-2025 that we are calling "Word and World" as we try proactively to engage with events taking place in our own nation and worldwide during the course of those two years. A full draft table of readings is within the issue and will shortly be made available on the website.

We have also included some resources to facilitate churches going through transition whether that is closure of buildings, unions, linkages, groupings and so on.
